Armenian nation has a history of thousand years. During many centuries culture has constantly been created, which is now an important and impartial part of the world civilization. Armenians began their ingenious work thousands years ago. Assuming this great heritage, we must also realize the responsibility to preserve and also to estimate it. To estimate in the broad sense of the word. This is the main task of the auction, organized by the “Armenian collectors’ union”, which represents the selected works of Armenian artists from the middle of the 19th century up to nowadays. The new period of the development of Armenian fine arts starts from the first third of the 19th century. During this period Armenian art got closer to the Russian and European art. Many artists of the 19th century got their education at the academies of Petersburg, Paris and Munich. National art was enriched with new methods of depiction and genre diversity. In this period the artistic stage enters Hovhannes Aivazovsky (1817-1900), who became famous all over the world for his seascape paintings. Aivazovsky contributed to the development of this genre in Armenian art. Such artists as Emanuel Maghdesian (1857-1908), Vardan Makhokhian (1869-1937), Arsene Chabanian (1864-1949), Karapet (Charles) Adamian (1872-1947) became the successors of his art. Presented at the auction Gevorg Bashindjaghian (1857-1925) is considered to be the founder of landscape genre in Armenian painting. He became the first artist praising the nature of Caucasus and particularly of Armenia. In the 19th century in Armenian fine art was also developed the historical genre, the founder of which was Vardges Sureniants (1860-1921). Recalling dramatic years of Armenian history, Sureniants constantly stated the idea of patriotism. Another representative of classic masters of the new period was Yeghishe Tadevosian (1870-1936), whose art was a step towards mastering impressionism and using it in his own way, sometimes compiling it with pointillism. In the same channel are the creations of another talented artist of the time – Vahram Gaifedjian (1879-1960). His canvases are close to impressionism by the true feeling. Gaifedjian was an artist of a delicate taste and high culture of painting. Yervand Kochar (1899-1979) has a special place in the art of the 20th century. His creations became a brilliant interlacement of Tiflis type, elements of cubism and the classical drawing. He was in unceasing search of the new, bold methods. Kochar was striving for finding the fourth dimension – the time. He became the founder of the so-called “painting in the space” – the syntheses of sculpture and painting. The works of this great master were exhibited in the world famous museums, side by side with creations of Picasso, Miro, Dali, etc. The name of Arshile Gorky (Vostanik Adoyan, 1905-1948) is widely known all over the world. Appearing in USA in 1920 he became the founder of the abstract surrealism in American art. His artworks are on exhibit in many museums in Europe and the USA. Another outstanding surrealist is Leon Tutundjian (1905-1968). His “Yellow mask” became one of the best-known pieces of the 20th century art. In the best museums and galleries all over the world his works attract one’s attention by their delicate character and refine minimalism. Speaking about the masters of Armenian origin, but of quite a European scale we can’t fail mentioning Carzou (Garnik Zulumian, 1907-2000) and Jansem (Hovhannes Semerdjian, 1920-2013). Talented and original art of the both masters already long ago has won its deserved place. 10 Patriarch of contemporary Armenian painting Martiros Saryan (1880-1972) has put the main principles of the national art of the first half of the 20th century. Later on he became the Godfather of another talented master, Minas Avetisian (1928-1975), who went on developing principles of the national school of painting and became the person, who, as Saryan told himself, “made the step to the world of the sun”. Side by side with Minas was working another great artist of 1960s Ashot Hovhannisian (1928-1987), whose artworks brought new qualities to the national art of Armenia and at the same time are very homogeneous in the each context of the European art. And, of course, Vruir Galstian. Always talented and sometimes unexpected. Hakob Hakobian (1923-2013) is a new phenomenon of Armenian painting. Being born in the strange land, he got European education and repatriated to Armenia as already a mature master. During the long years of his creative activity he has preserved his delicate palette and the strict structure of his canvases, bringing his version of the national painting. On the auction are also represented Seiran Khatlamadjian (1937-1994), Robert Elibekian (1941), Varuzhan Vardanian (1948-2010), who are considered to be the classics of Armenian modern. Having their original style and comprehension of the world, they are now an unseparable part of Armenian palette of the 20th century. The list of creators is continued by Laura Avetisian (1941), Hamlet Hovsepian (1950), Aivaz Avoyan (1955-2011), Kiki (Grigor Mikaelian, 1956), who lives in USA and every time presents to the onlookers the new versions of his famous topic “Bobo”, and Nerses Melikian (1957). The chronology ends with the names of Tigran Asatrian (1968) and Suren Hambardzumian (1977), much younger artists, who have already completed their creative principles. We hope that this new undertaking of “Armenian collectors’ union” will become an occasion for the true estimation of Armenian art and its further promotion in the world market.
